Support School Paras Fighting Unjust Terminations

August 21, 2011

Just two months after education paraprofessionals in the Branford public schools voted to organize into UE, they are fighting the unjust termination of four of their members. The four paras who have been dismissed have spotless work records and experience ranging from two years to more than 20. Three of the four have bachelor's degrees. One was a leader in the union organizing drive last spring.

The Board of Education claims the terminations are in response to anticipated budget cuts. But the board has also posted job openings for nine new positions in special education.

When Aramark Announces "Hard Bargaining," Local 1121 Responds with Hard Fightback

July 18, 2011

When the company's chief negotiator announces that he's there to conduct hard bargaining before negotiations even begin, you know you're in for a rough time.

The Aramark corporate human resources manager who made that declaration to the UE Local 1121 bargaining committee backed it up with horrible proposals. The company wanted a five-year contract with two-tier wages, no time-and-a-half pay after eight hours, and one-quarter of the workforce to be temps. The company also came after union leave, healthcare, vacation and incentive pay rates.

UE Local 208 Celebrates $2.9 Million Back Pay Settlement with Vermont Service Center Contractors

May 4, 2011

UE Local 208 has achieved an important victory with a wage settlement, announced May 3, between the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and Stanley Associates and other contractors at the Vermont Service Center. The settlement means $2.9 million in payments to around 700 workers who have been employed by the contractors at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Center in St. Albans in the past three years. The money is owed because Stanley and the other contractors systematically underpaid workers.

Japan's Disaster Victims Include Many Zenroren Members; Union Seeks Assistance

March 17, 2011

People around the world are watching the situation in Japan with deep concern and sympathy for the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami, and with worry over the dangerous situation at the Fukusima Daiichi nuclear power plant. For UE, those concerns are intensified by our close fraternal relationship with Zenroren, Japan’s large progressive union confederation, a connection that goes back more than 15 years.
