As President Bush continues his single-minded push for war against Iraq, working people around the world have increasingly demonstrated their desire for a peaceful resolution to the Middle East crisis. The massive peace demonstrations that took place around the world over the weekend of February 15 and 16 were indications of the growing tide of public opinion against the Bush plan of attack. Literally millions of people declared their opposition to a military strike against Iraq; peace demonstrations were held in more than 600 cities around the world, including dozens in the United States. Delegations of UE members joined the massive peace demonstration in New York City, the regional demonstration held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and several others.
Growing numbers of trade unionists in the United States are also speaking out for a peaceful solution to the crisis. On February 19, a press event sponsored by U.S. Labor Against the War (USLAW) released a peace declaration signed by the leaders of 200 trade unions from 53 different countries. These unions represented a total of 130 million working people around the world, and included signatories representing more than 4.5 million union members in the United States, including UE.
