How Not to Get Shafted out of Your Vote
Investigative journalist Greg Palast has released a new movie, Vigilantes, Inc., about the extremists that have taken it upon themselves to challenge other American citizens’ eligibility to vote, and a new website, SaveYourVote.org [1], that explains how to prevent your vote from being stolen by these extremists. On the website, Palast explains that challenges to voter eligibility have gone up by 9,600 percent since 2022. 851,000 of these challenges have been filed by right-wing activists who are mostly challenging the voter registrations of people of color.
On the Save Your Vote website [2], you can download a guide on how to take your vote back and ensure it counts in the election. Some easy steps include voting early, checking your registration as soon as possible, voting in person when you can, and calling 1-(866) OUR-VOTE to speak to lawyers on standby if your vote is challenged. You can also file a complaint with the Department of Justice if your vote has been challenged.
In the educational movie, Palast shows how right-wing extremists are using eligibility challenge statutes that exist in 46 states to disenfranchise voters, especially working-class voters of color. Many of these statutes were originally passed as part of Jim Crow barriers to voting.
