WORKSHOPS

Here are this year's workshop choices. Please note that the registration deadline is Friday, September 7, 2007. All delegates will receive this information in the mail once properly completed credentials have been received by the National Office.

Workshops are open to all UE Convention delegates and any UE member (such as those living in the Pittsburgh area) who would like to attend. Please do not register for workshops unless you are definitely planning to attend them!

Morning Session

  1. Researching Your Employer and Preparing for Negotiations
    Using the Internet and other resources to research your employer and putting your Local in position to negotiate the best possible contract. Getting agreement on our priorities and making sure the employer hears this loud and clear. Led by UE International Representative Mark Meinster and UE Research Director Karl Zimmerman.
  2. Hybrid Pension Plans and 401(k)s
    How much money do you need to retire? Bargaining and improving 401(k), 403(b) or 457 defined contribution plans and understanding the new hybrid defined benefit/defined contribution pension plans. Led by UE International Representative Dave Cohen
  3. Trends in Health Care Bargaining
    A look at efforts by employers and health insurance companies to shift costs onto employees and strategies to resist and push for a better solution. Led by UE International Representative Carol Lambiase and UE Northeast Regional President Peter Knowlton.
  4. Member to Member Harassment
    What is the Union’s role in dealing with abusive behavior when it happens within the bargaining unit? Confronting and dealing with sexual harassment, racial discrimination or other forms of abusive behavior. Led by UE International Representative Leanna Noble and UE News Editor Al Hart.

Afternoon Session

  1. Arbitration - How to When Forced to
    How to thoroughly plan and prepare for the best possible case while avoiding the pitfalls of arbitration. Led by UE International Representative Steve Tormey.
  2. Shop Floor Tactics
    What to do when the boss says no. What’s legal, what’s illegal and what works. Led by UE International Representative David Cohen.
  3. Trade Deals and Their Effects on Workers
    “Free Trade Agreements” have not brought freedom and have been detrimental to workers. This workshop will explore some of the negative impacts of NAFTA, CAFTA and other such agreements, as well as legislative and organizational responses. Led by Prof. Dan LaBotz, long-time labor and community activist, UE International Affairs Director Robin Alexander and Benedicto Martinez, National leader of the FAT.
  4. How to Organize a Union Even if They Say You Can’t — Overcoming Laws and Limits
    How do you organize a union in a place where union contracts are against the law? Or how do you recruit for the union where contracts are legal but membership is strictly optional? Join a discussion of the challenges we encounter when workers' rights are restricted by law. Learn UE's responses, and suggest some of your own. Led by UE International Representatives Saladin Muhammad and Greg Cross, with Ashaki Binta of the International Worker Justice Campaign.
